The Children's Garden at OCAC

While continuing to maintain and fund the first phase of the OCAC gardens, the Des Fleurs Garden Club began building a children’s garden in the spring of 2007. With input from club members, Margarette Beckwith of Beckwith-Chapman Associates Landscape Architecture designed the garden. Funds were provided by a significant grant from the Dewald Family Foundation, grants from the Oxford Community Foundation and other organizations and the generous contributions from members of the community.

The garden provides a hands on gardening experience for children attending the annual Gardeneering Camp and environmental education opportunities for elementary school children. These programs are facilitated by the Oxford Community Arts Center and the Environmental Mobile Unit.

POTTING SHED PROJECT
The last essential need as outlined in the original garden design was a 10' x 12' potting shed for storage of equipment and teaching materials. In the spring of 2010 Des Fleurs began the task of raising funds and building this much needed resource. The last few nails were hammered into the building in the fall of 2010.
We are really excited about the shed’s green roof, which is another opportunity to show our children sustainable and ecologically wise options. The roof is a well tested product “Live Roof” which includes roof edging and 1' x 2' sedum planted pans.
Special thanks to Dick Wheelwright who spent countless volunteer hours gathering materials and building the shed, Brenda Frey and Caroline Croswell for their grant writing skills, Margaret Beckwith for her research into living roofs and for designing great fundraising materials and to Barbara Chenault and Marta Wendt for their tireless fundraising efforts!
